If you’ve been sewing for a while, you probably own a nice sewing machine, a serger, and maybe even an embroidery machine or a quilting machine…
But, do you own the Cricut Maker?
Cricut machines are not just for paper crafters anymore! The Cricut Maker can cut out almost any type of fabric with the press of a button. It is an incredibly useful tool for when you want to cut out small sewing projects with precision. Sounds pretty awesome, right?
Cricut Now Has a Rotary Cutter Blade for Fabric
Both the Cricut Maker and the Cricut Explore Air 2 can cut out fabric, but the Cricut Maker has specific tools to help you do it better. With the Cricut Maker, you can use the amazing rotary blade — it has a 360-degree design to swivel on point and cut fabric around corners and in small circles. It is not simply for straight cuts.
Cricut has several blades that can cut fabric, but the best one is (by far) the rotary blade. It works just like the rotary cutter you already use in your sewing room.
The following chart shows all the Cricut blades that can cut fabric:
Cricut Blade | Compatible Machine | What It Can Cut |
Deep-Point Blade | Cricut Explore Air 2 and Cricut Maker | Thick, stury fabric, such as craft foam, leather, and vinyl |
Bonded-Fabric Blade | Cricut Explore Air 2 and Cricut Maker | Bonded fabric, such as burlap, denim, polyester, and stiffened felt |
Knife Blade | Cricut Maker Only | Thick, dense material, such as leather and vinyl |
Rotary Blade | Cricut Maker Only | Delicate, soft fabric, such as canvas, cashmere, chiffon, cotton, crepe, denim, felt, flannel, fleece, jersey knit, lace, leather, linen, lycra, muslin, polyester, satin, silk, terry, tulle, and velvet. |
The rotary blade is obviously the best for sewing projects. It can cut the most types of fabric. The rotary blade can even cut delicate and soft fabric without bonding. However, you need the Cricut Maker machine to use it.

It’s easy to install the Cricut rotary blade. You simply remove the old blade in the clamp and match up the housing gears on the machine with your new Cricut rotary blade. Then, you calibrate your rotary blade in Cricut Design Space so it’s ready to use.
If you’re wondering how long the Cricut rotary blade will last, that depends on how often you use it and what material you’re cutting. It does get dull, just like any other blade. You’ll know you need a new blade when your pattern doesn’t come out clean and sharp anymore. But don’t worry, replacement blades are inexpensive. You can probably use the same blade without problem for 6 to 12 months.
Accessories You Need with the Cricut Rotary Tool
To use the Cricut rotary tool, you also need a special cutting mat. Cricut developed the pink FabricGrip mat for fabric. It has a sticky surface that keeps fabric in place while your Cricut Maker is cutting.
The pink FabricGrip mat comes in both a 12”x12” and 12”x24” size. The larger mat is obviously better because you can cut more fabric at once.
Here are some other accessories to help with your Cricut Maker sewing projects:
- Brayer Tool: To smooth out bubbles and help lay your fabric flat on the Pink FabricGrip mat.
- Broad-Tip Tweezers: To remove fabric from your cutting mat.
- Scraper: To remove fabric from your cutting mat.
- Lint Roller: To remove small scraps of fabric and lint from your cutting mat.
The Cricut Maker is an incredibly useful tool to have in your sewing room. You can turn to it whenever you want to work on a quick sewing project. Plus, Cricut has a partnership with Simplicity Patterns and Riley Blake Fabrics to help you create almost anything you can think of.
