Your kids deserve a Halloween that’s full of fun. No costume should be holding them back. So, stop making the following four mistakes when sewing Halloween costumes for your kids.
Choosing Costumes That Aren’t Appropriate for the Weather
October is chilly, especially at night. It’s not unheard of to have snow on the ground when you take your kids out to trick or treat. That means you should pick Halloween costumes that are warm. Otherwise, you’ll have to make your kids put on jackets and cover up their cute costumes — that takes away half the fun. Try to think of costumes that have long sleeves, hoods, or thick fabric so you can leave the jackets at home.
Designing Costumes That Are Uncomfortable
Another thing to think about is the comfort of your kids’ Halloween costumes. Kids get irritable if they have to wear something that’s scratchy, heavy, or awkward. It’s fun to get creative with your costumes, but you need to be practical, too. Make sure your kids can sit comfortably in their costumes and don’t have to carry anything too heavy. I’m also not a fan of masks because they make it hard for your kids to breathe and see.
Spending Too Much Money on Costumes
If you do a lot of sewing, you know that it’s not always cheaper to sew something than it is to buy it from the store. This is definitely true for costumes. Depending on what costume you want to make, you might be better off buying something premade at the store because specialty fabrics and notions are expensive. It doesn’t make sense to spend a lot of money on Halloween costumes for your kids when they’re only worn once or twice.
Planning to Sew Costumes Without Giving Yourself Enough Time
Sewing projects never turn out as well when you have to rush, and the stress of a deadline means you’re more likely to make mistakes. If you don’t have sufficient time to sew Halloween costumes for your kids, you should just buy them.
Sewing is supposed to be fun and it won’t be if you don’t give yourself enough time to complete your projects. Plus, when you’re stressed, you’re not as patient with your kids, and that takes away some of the fun of Halloween. You know your skills, so only take on a sewing project you’re confident you can complete in time.
When you’re done sewing Halloween costumes for your kids, don’t forget to make something for them to carry their candy, too.
