Do you have what it takes to run a successful handmade business? Creating beautiful products people love is only half the battle. You also need to possess three important characteristics: passion, confidence, and drive.

Passion: You Love What You Do

If you’re like most handmade business owners, you started your business as a side hustle. You might still be in that stage and wondering if you’re ready to go full time. Successful business owners spend all their free time on their business because they are passionate about it. You must love what you do or you won’t want to spend time doing it.

Of course, passion doesn’t mean you’re not willing to change course. Passion means you love what you do and you’ll do anything to reach your goals, even if that means going a different direction when things aren’t working the way you planned. You must never admit defeat and keep your mind open to different ideas. The business landscape is constantly changing.

Confidence: You Ignore Negative People

There will always be people who do not like your business or your products. This is unavoidable. At some point, you are going to get a bad review or negative feedback. Successful handmade business owners do not let this crush them. They are prepared for the emotional ups and downs of running a business and remain confident in their abilities.

Negative feedback is hard to deal with, especially if it is your spouse that does not support your handmade business. However, you can’t dwell on the negativity or let it stop you from reaching your goals. Learn from your mistakes, admit when you are wrong, take responsibility, and persevere! You must learn to build up a tolerance towards negativity.

Drive: You Work Hard

Most people don’t see instant success overnight. It doesn’t matter if you have the most beautiful handmade products in the world if you’re not willing to promote them. Building relationships with potential customers is hard work.

Successful handmade business owners are not shy about what they do. They work hard creating, and then they work even harder promoting. They don’t let perfectionism get in their way.

You need to create a website to sell your products, rent space at craft shows, and promote your business on social media. The more places you can promote your business, the more potential customers you can reach. Simply opening an Etsy shop and listing your handmade products is no longer enough.
