Learn to Sew with Cara Stromness

Sewing should be fun, not frustrating. 🧵

If you've ever been confused by all the settings on your machine, struggled to follow sewing instructions, or felt overwhelmed by all the fabric and tool choices, you're in the right place.

Hi! I'm Cara Stromness, founder of Sewing Society.

I've spent more than a decade teaching beginners how to sew, helping students overcome the same frustrating challenges again and again. Along the way, I've created hundreds of educational resources to make learning sewing simpler and less overwhelming.

I've also learned something important…

Most people don't quit sewing because it's too hard. They quit because no one explains it in a way that makes sense.

That's why I created Sewing Society.

What I've Noticed About Beginners

After teaching sewing lessons for years, I realized that almost every beginner struggles with the same problems.

  • Threading mistakes
  • Not knowing where to start or what to learn
  • Confusing pattern instructions
  • Choosing the wrong fabric or thread
  • Buying tools they don't actually need
  • Feeling overwhelmed by their machines

The information was out there, but it was scattered across YouTube videos, blog posts, manuals, and forums.

Students didn't need more information.

They needed someone to organize it, explain it in plain English, and teach it step by step so sewing stays fun instead of frustrating.

So that's what I set out to build.

More Than a Store

Sewing is easier than people think, and I want to get you to the point where you can smile and proudly say, “I made that!”

My teaching style is skill based, with clear, step-by-step instruction that removes the guesswork so you can build confidence and enjoy learning new techniques.

Sewing Society isn't just an online store.

My goal is to build the best place on the internet for beginners to learn sewing.

My vision is simple: create one place where beginners can find everything they need — from free guides and printable resources to online courses, projects kits, and the right tools and machines for beginners.

Today you'll find:

  • Beginner-Friendly Sewing Education
  • Printable Resources
  • Troubleshooting Guides
  • Sewing Machine Recommendations
  • Online Courses
  • An AI-Powered Sewing Coach
  • Sewing Project Kits

Everything is designed with one goal:

Help beginners become confident sewists!

Why Learn From Me?

I've spent years working with real beginners (not just making projects for social media).

I've stood beside students while they figured out why their thread kept breaking, why their fabric wouldn't feed, and why their stitches didn't look right. I've answered the same questions hundreds of times, watched beginners make the same mistakes, and celebrated with them as they gained confidence.

Because of that experience, I know:

  • The questions beginners are afraid to ask.
  • The mistakes they're most likely to make.
  • The fastest way to solve common sewing problems
  • And, how to explain sewing in plain English

AI is an incredible tool, and I use it every day to create better learning resources for my students. I've even trained an AI Sewing Coach that you can use for FREE!

But AI can't replace years of standing beside a sewing machine helping someone figure out why their thread keeps breaking or why their fabric won't feed.

Those real teaching moments have shaped everything I create.

My Mission

I believe sewing is one of the most valuable skills a person can learn.

It teaches patience, creativity, problem-solving, and confidence. It is a skill that can bring joy for a lifetime, whether you're 8 years old or 80.

And there's nothing quite like the feeling of creating something with your own two hands.

My goal is simple:

Make sewing easier to learn than it's ever been before.

Whether you're sewing your very first pillowcase, making your first quilt, or tackling your first garment, I want Sewing Society to be the place you turn whenever you need help.

Whether you're looking for your first sewing machine, printable guides, online courses, troubleshooting help, or just a little encouragement, I'm glad you're here.

Welcome to Sewing Society. Let's make sewing simple.
