A Harry Potter Shirt for My Sister (Butterick B6418 Review)
I spotted this Marauder's Map knit fabric and immediately knew I had to make something for my Harry Potter-obsessed sister. Using Butterick pattern B6418, this color-blocked top came together in just two hours — here's how it turned out, plus the perfect fabric pairing that makes it extra magical.

My sister is a die-hard Harry Potter fan, so when I came across this amazing Marauder's Map knit fabric, I knew exactly what I was making — and who it was for.
The Project

I used Butterick pattern B6418 for this top, and from cutting to finishing it only took about two hours. That's a win in my book. The pattern is genuinely beginner-friendly — straightforward construction, easy to follow, and perfect for a quick gift project.
My only minor note: the sleeves ran a little long. An easy fix with a simple hem adjustment, but worth keeping in mind if you're making this for someone petite. Otherwise the fit and finish came together beautifully.
I finished the seams with my serger and used my coverstitch machine for the hems, which gives it that clean, store-bought look that's hard to achieve any other way.
The Fabric Combination
I first spotted this Harry Potter Marauder's Map fabric when a friend used it to make a color-blocked hoodie for her daughter. I immediately needed to know where it came from. It was originally from JoAnn Fabrics, but you can also find it on Amazon.
For the solid panels, I paired it with maroon cotton lycra from Peek-A-Boo Pattern Shop, and the combination is perfect. The deep maroon reads very Gryffindor, and it complements the warm tones in the map print beautifully. If you're planning a Harry Potter sewing project, these two fabrics were made for each other.
The Embroidery I Wish I'd Added
Pin ItIf my embroidery machine hadn't been in the shop, I would have added a little text near the hem — something like "Mischief Managed" or "I Solemnly Swear I Am Up to No Good." That would have taken this shirt from cute to completely over the top in the best possible way. Next time!
One of my favorite things about sewing is being able to make something truly personal for the people I love. This shirt couldn't be more perfectly her, and that's something you can't find in any store.
