With all the buzz about Disney+ launching in November, I know I’m not the only one reminiscing about Disney movies from my childhood.

I’ve been singing songs all week…

As I thought about my favorite Disney movies, I realized several have sewing scenes in the, I thought it would be fun to compile them in a list for SewingSociety.com.

I hope you enjoy!

(I’m sure I missed some. Let me know in the comments below.)

The Dressmaking Scene from Cinderella

One of my favorite Disney scenes is when the mice in Cinderella decide to make a dress for “Cinderelly” to wear to the ball. With the help of the birds, the mice follow a pattern in a book to transform Cinderella’s old-fashioned dress into a pretty pink and white gown. They hand sew everything, adding lace trim, bows, and even a blue pearl necklace.

I love when the two robins measure the collar line and then use their fingers (feathers) to tell the mice on the floor how much lace they need. I also like the part where one of the girl mice threads a needle by licking the end of the thread and then sticking her entire hand through the eye of the needle.

The Dressmaking Scene from Sleeping Beauty

Another one of my favorite Disney scenes is when Merryweather and Flora fight over the color of Aurora’s birthday dress. The three fairs send Aurora out to pick flowers while they make birthday preparations, including a cakes and a dress. They attempt to do everything without magic first, but eventually whip out their wands.

I laugh through the whole scene. Flora begins by cutting a circular hole in some fabric for Aurora’s feet to go through. Then, she drapes fabric over Merryweather until the frumpy dress is covered in bows and is a big mess.

Sewing Scenes in Other Disney Movies

A surprising number of animated Disney movies have sewing scenes in them besides Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty.

Here are the ones I could think of:

  • Peter Pan: Wendy sews Peter’s shadow to his shoe.
  • 101 Dalmations: Cruella DeVille’s entire plot involves sewing coats out of puppy skins.
  • Hercules: The three fates cut threads.
  • The Incredibles: Edna designs and sews superhero suits for the Incredibles.
  • Brave: Merida must mend the family tapestry to break the curse on her mother.
  • The Princess and the Frog: Tiana’s mother is a seamstress who sews frilly dresses for Lottie, a Southern Belle.
  • Tangled: Rapunzel makes a dress for Pascal, her pet chameleon.
  • Toy Story 2: Woody’s arm gets sewn back on by Geri the toy repairman.

Can you think of any other Disney Movies with sewing scenes? Tell me in the comments below and I’ll add them to the list.
