We’ve been doing some back-to-school shopping this week for my son. He is headed into second grade next week… I can’t believe how big he is getting!
Like many seven year olds, my son absolutely loves Mario! I decided to sew him a new button-up shirt for school out of some Mario-themed cotton. I thought the new shirt could give him some extra confidence as he starts out the school year. I have a little bit of left-over fabric, so I’ll probably make him a matching facemask, too.
Here are some cute pics of my son in his new shirt:

Here are the notions you’ll need to buy to sew the children’s Classic Oxford Button-Up Shirt:
- 1.5 yards of cotton fabric. You could use flannel or any soft, woven fabric.
- Lightweight interfacing for the collar and button placket
- 8 small buttons
- Universal 80/12 sewing needle
I think my son’s shirt turned out well. It wasn’t too hard to sew, especially since I left the pocket off and made the short-sleeve version. However, I rated this pattern ‘intermediate’ because the placket, collar, and curved hem are challenging for a beginner to figure out. Don’t be nervous, though. Peek-a-Boo Pattern Shop has some really nice picture instructions. That’s why I am such a fan of this pattern company.
I made my son a size 7, and it turned out slightly big. In store-bought clothes he is a 6-7 right now, so just make your kids the size they typically wear. I will definitely be using this pattern again.
Let me know if you try it. Leave a pic in the comments below!
