If you’re looking for an easy skirt pattern with pockets, the Donovan from Helen’s Closet Patterns is a great pick. I just finished sewing one and it only took 2 hours!
I received the Donovan skirt pattern in a sewing kit from IndieStitch. I love this sewing subscription box! Every month they send you a pattern, fabric, and all the notions you need to sew a women’s garment. I’m completely capable of choosing my own pattern and fabric, but it’s fun to get a surprise project in the mail every month…
The Donovan skirt is actually the first sewing project I have received from IndieStitch. They sent me some lightweight chambray fabric in the kit that is perfect for Spring.

Here are the notions you’ll need to buy to sew the Donovan skirt:
- 2 yards of woven fabric
- Matching thread
- Universal needle
- 1.5” elastic
- Drawstring (optional)
- Lightweight, fusible interfacing (optional)
The Donovan skirt was super easy to sew. The hardest part was figuring out how to fold the pocket pieces. However, the instructions were good and there are videos you can watch if you get confused.
I prefer my skirts to be a little longer, so I added three inches to the length of my Donovan. IndieStitch gave me 2.5 yards of fabric, so I had plenty of yardage to do it. I also added the drawstring option, mostly for style. You can leave it off if you prefer.
If you’re trying to decide which size to make, I suggest you choose the size that fits your hips because the waist can be cinched to any size you need. You only need to choose the size that fits your waist if your waist is bigger than your hips.
Overall, I am pleased with the way my Donovan skirt turned out. Some people complain that the pockets bulge out a little at the hips, but I didn’t find that to be the case. I paired my skirt with a white button-up shirt and some sandals. I think the look is perfect for spring.
If you’ve never tried a sewing subscription box before, it is so much fun. Head over and read my IndieStitch Review to learn more. You’ll get to try a new sewing pattern every month.
