If you’re looking to buy a new sewing machine, the choice is not going to be easy. There are over a dozen different sewing machine manufacturers, and each offers several models. Brand is an important factor to consider when choosing a sewing machine. After all, you want to make sure you choose a trusted and reliable sewing machine that will last for years.
So, what is the best brand of sewing machine?
There’s a lot of debate on that matter…
Note: There’s a poll at the bottom of this post. I want to know what you think the best sewing machine brand is, too.
My Pick for the Best Brand of Sewing Machine
I’ve owned four sewing machines — a vintage Bernina, an entry-level Singer, the Brother SE400, and the Bernette b79 (Made by Bernina). Based on my own experience, I think the best sewing machine brand is Bernina.
I loved my vintage Bernina sewing machine. It was the machine I learned to sew on and I used it through high school. It was truly a workhorse. It was passed down to me from my grandma, so you know it was built to last.
I then bought a basic Singer sewing machine. I can’t remember the model number, but it had about 20 stitches. I was sold on the one-step buttonhole feature. However, it really wasn’t anything too special. I’m not saying Singer is a bad brand, but it didn’t seem to run as smoothly as my vintage Bernina and I had a lot of problems with it. Of course, that was partly due to user error.
I eventually upgraded to the Brother SE400. It was a sewing/embroidery machine combo and I was super excited. That Brother sewing machine was really nice, but I ended up needing to replace it after an unfortunate mishap with my toddler. If you’re looking for a good beginner sewing machine, I highly recommend Brother, especially if you’re wanting to try out some machine embroidery. You can get the Brother SE625 for around $500 on Amazon.
After tons of research, I decided to buy the Bernette b79, a sewing machine made by Bernina. I am so glad I went back to Bernina! I love the Bernette b79 so much. It has some amazing features, such as a built-in walking foot, automatic thread securing, and a 6”x10” embroidery hoop. I spent about $2,000 on this sewing machine, but I think it was worth every penny. Bernina has proven to me again that it is an amazing brand. Vote for the Best Sewing Machine Brand
Based on what I see at the store, the most popular sewing machine brands are Brother, Singer, and Janome. They are the most inexpensive and you can find models under $500. However, inexpensive doesn’t mean they are the best brand. You can definitely get a lot more features and higher quality if you’re willing to spend $2,000 or more.
Even though I love Bernina and I think it is the best sewing machine brand, I know others will have different opinions. That’s why I wanted to take a poll from my readers. What sewing machine brand do you think is the best? Submit your answer below.
Thanks for voting! I’d also love to hear about your favorite sewing machine. Tell me about it in the comments below.

I have a little Janome that I take to Quilting Volunteer Groups. I have two Vikings that have done well for me.
