You’re probably already familiar with what a basic sewing machine can do. I hope you have one that you love. However, at some point, you might want to buy a serger. Let me show you why.
How Is a Serger Different Than a Sewing Machine?
A serger is a specialty sewing machine that can sew and finish seams at the same time. Here are some photos so you can see the beautiful edges a serger can create:
The most common sergers use three to four thread cones, but some have more. Typically, there are two needles on top and two needles on bottom that work together to create a finished seam.
A serger is a very good investment because it enables you to finish off seam edges more quickly than a sewing machine alone. The caveat is that sergers are expensive and take up space. There’s also a learning curve to threading a serger.
Can a Serger Replace My Sewing Machine?
Sergers are amazing because they can sew and finish seams fast. However, they cannot entirely replace your sewing machine. You’ll still need a sewing machine to create button holes, attach zippers, perform topstitching, and many other sewing tasks.
If you’re trying to decide whether to buy a sewing machine or a serger, choose the sewing machine. A serger is a nice companion machine, but it is something you can buy later. I didn’t buy a serger until I had been sewing for a few years. There are lots of ways to finish seams without a serger, but a serger is definitely the best way.
Can I Use My Sewing Machine as a Serger?
If you don’t want to spend money on a serger, most sewing machines have a side-cutter presser foot you can buy. This cheap serger alternative works, but it is slow compared to a serger. It also doesn’t produce the exact same results. The difference is that you can’t sew and serge at the same time with a side-cutter attachment — you can only serge.
I bought a side-cutter for my sewing machine back when I was learning to sew. It cost around $20. The side cutter worked ok but it was a little tricky to figure out. It is a good substitute if you can’t afford a serger.
If you do a lot of sewing, you’ll probably still want to invest in a serger when you can. The side-cutter attachment works, but it is slow.
What Is a Good Serger to Buy?
Just like sewing machines, sergers come in a wide range of prices. The more you are willing to spend, the more features you can get. I own the Brother 1034D. It wasn’t very expensive, but I think it is nice and easy to use. I haven’t had any problems with it. If you have more money to spend, Baby Lock is a top serger brand.
