Do you struggle with product descriptions?

You’re not alone…

Many handmade sellers hate writing product descriptions because of the extra time and effort they require. It’s easier to take a photo, write a one- or two-sentence description, and hit list. Unfortunately, that’s not always enough to get someone to buy what you’re selling.

It’s true that your product photo is the most important part of your product listing, but a well-written product description can turn a shopper that is on the fence into a buyer. Learning to write good product descriptions can help you make more sales. Yes, it does take a little extra time, but you will get faster with practice.

Now, I know what you’re thinking…

Even if you had the time to write product descriptions, you’d have no idea what to write.

That’s why I’ve created this list of things shoppers want to know about your handmade products. You can choose the questions that are most relevant to your product and answer them.

While you’re writing, always think about who your ideal customer is and describe your product to them as if you were sitting next to them in the same room.

Questions Customers Ask About Your Products

  1. What is it and what is it for? – Most people can tell what your product is from the photo, but they may not realize all the benefits and features it offers.
  2. How does it work? – You don’t need to describe simple items like shirts, but some bags and other handmade items may need additional information.
  3. What color/shade is it? – Your computer screen can distort the color of your products. That’s why it’s best to state the color and shade.
  4. What size is it? – Shoppers want to know the dimensions of your product or have access to a sizing chart for clothing.
  5. What materials do you use and where do you get them? – Some shoppers have allergies to certain types of materials, or they care about ethically sourced fabric.
  6. What does it feel like? – Describe the texture and weight.
  7. Does it have a smell? – Some fabrics have a smell until they are washed a few times, especially those made from petroleum products. Tell shoppers when the smell will go away. If you or someone in your home smokes, make sure that your items do not smell like smoke.
  8. How do you wash and care for it? – Shoppers want to know when items are dry clean only.
  9. Is there anyone that should not buy or use it? – For example, is the item safe for children and pets?
  10. What comes with it? – Do shoppers need to buy anything to use your product, such as batteries?
  11. What makes it better than your competitors’? – List your product’s unique selling features and value proposition.
  12. Why should someone buy it? – Your goal is to convince shoppers to buy your product. Give them a reason to do so. This is the most important thing to answer in your product descriptions.

You don’t have to address all these questions in your product descriptions, but make sure you do address the ones that are relevant to the product you’re selling. This is simply a list of questions to get you started. It takes time to master the art of product descriptions.

Something else that will improve your sales is a FAQs page. This is a document that provides additional information about your products and business. It’s especially useful for outlining shop policies and placing all this information in one place for your shoppers.
