Natural indigo dye has been around since ancient times. It is extracted from the leaves of certain Indigofera plants. However, most indigo dye sold today is synthetic. That’s why it’s so difficult to get the recipe and indigo colour right for Shibori dyeing.

Don’t let that scare you, though…

Shibori indigo dyeing is fun and you can make amazing items with some practice and the right products!

Where to Learn Shibori Indigo Dyeing

Most people learn the art of Shibori and indigo dyeing through trial and error. There are so many different indigo powder and indigo dye kits on the market that it’s hard to know where to start or which products to buy. Experimenting can be fun, but if you want to avoid wasting time and money, I suggest you take a class.

Kaari Meng offers two online classes on Shibori indigo dyeing. She has been experimenting with this art for over ten years. Kaari walks you through how to create your dye vat for the perfect indigo color and also shows you several Shibori folding techniques. Here are links where you can sign up for Kaari’s classes:

If you’re more of a book learner, get Nicola Gouldsmith’s Shibori book. She explains how to create your indigo dye vat and prepare your fabric. Nicola also provides dipping, rinsing, and unfolding techniques that beginners can follow. Here’s a link to buy her book on Amazon:
