I love sewing, so I thought it would be fun to make a list of all the sewing and quilting holidays you can celebrate this year. A lot of these holidays were created by retail stores to promote sales, but I’m one of those people who looks for any excuse to celebrate or have a party. Are you the same way?

If I missed any sewing or quilting holidays, please let me know in the comments below so that I can add them to the list!

January

(No sewing or quilting holidays)

February

  • National Embroidery Month: The entire month of February is dedicated to the craft of embroidery. You’ll see tons of online embroidery stores running major discounts on digital designs. If you’d like to get started in machine embroidery, I recommend getting the Bernette b79 machine. It’s a midrange machine with a 6”x10” hoop.
  • Visit Your Local Quilt Shop Day (4th Sat in Jan): This holiday was introduced by the Fabric Shop Network. Take the opportunity to admire the quilts on display in your local quilt shop and connect with other quilters in your community.
  • Flannel Day (Feb 10th): Did you know flannel has been around for more than 400 years? Wear something made of flannel on this day to stay cozy and warm.

March

  • National Quilting Month: The entire month of March is dedicated to quilting. It’s a great time to look for deals on quilt patterns and classes.
  • Quilting Day (3rd Sat in Mar): Spend the entire day quilting or shopping for fabric for your next quilt!

April

  • National Serger Month: The entire month of April is dedicated to sergers. It’s a great time to learn new serging techniques.
  • Zipper Day (April 29th): This day commemorates when a patent was issued for our modern-day zipper. Sew or wear something with a zipper to celebrate.
  • National Handmade Day (1st Sat in April): Spend some time sewing, quilting, or doing any other craft.

May

  • Hurray for Buttons Day (May 9th): Back in 1938, the National Button Society was established for collectors. If you collect buttons, this is a great day to show off your collection or shop for more.
  • Small Business Day (May 10th ): This is a great day to support people who run small sewing businesses. There are hundreds of them on Etsy.

June

  • Tailor’s Day (1st Wed in Jun): This day celebrates people who make, alter, and repair clothing professionally. If you know a tailor, make sure to thank them on this day.
  • Sewing Machine Day (June 13th): It’s debatable when the first sewing machine was invented… This day was chosen to celebrate how sewing machines have changed the fashion industry for the better.
  • Name Your Sewing Machine Day: June 29th): This is a day set aside for you to spend time with your sewing machine and give it a name if you haven’t already.

July

  • Thread the Needle Day (July 25th): “Thread the Needle” is a phrase that can be interpreted in many ways, but generally people consider it a metaphor for coming together. If you’ve been in an argument with someone, this is a good day to reach out and make amends.

August

  • Sewing Machine Day (Aug 12th): Another day to celebrate the invention of the sewing machine. If you’re looking for a new machine, this is a great day to find deals. Check out SewingMachinesPlus.com!

September

  • National Sewing Month: The entire month of September is dedicated to all things sewing. Be sure you subscribe to SewingSociety.com!
  • Sew with a Jelly Roll Day (3rd Sat in Sept): “Jelly Roll” is a term coined by Moda Fabrics to describe 2.5” precut strips of fabrics that are rolled up for packaging. To celebrate this day, grab a Jelly Roll and sew something fun.
  • Sew Be It Day (Sept 10th): This day commemorates the day Elias Howe was granted an American patent for a sewing machine. Make sure you set aside time to sew on this day to celebrate. The world would be a very different place if the sewing machine was not invented.

October

  • Seamstress Day (October 14th): This day is dedicated to people who sew clothing for themselves and others.
  • Sewing Lover’s Day (October 15th): It is unknown who started this holiday, but you can celebrate Sewing Lover’s Day and Seamstress Day as a 2-day event. Sewing retreats are in full swing this time of year.
  • Count Your Buttons Day (October 21st): Buttons used to be the only closure option for seamstresses. Make sure you recognize all the clothes you wear that still have buttons today.

November

  • Plaidurday (1st Fri in Oct): A worldwide celebration of plaid. Make sure you wear a plaid shirt or accessories.
  • Pins & Needles Day (Nov 27th): A celebration of this hit musical on Broadway between 1937 and 1940.

December

  • Make a Gift Day (Dec 3rd): This day encourages people to make handmade gifts.

I’ll be updating this list of sewing and quilting holidays often, so be sure to bookmark it!
