You can make sewing more than a hobby. Whether you want to be a fashion designer, sell handmade products on Etsy, or do some other job in the textile industry, you need to take some action to get you there.

One possible action is getting a degree.

I’m not saying a degree is the only way to become a fashion designer or to make money with your sewing skills. What I am saying is that a degree is one possible route you can take to start working towards your dreams. That’s better than taking no action.

School is expensive, but a scholarship can help you offset the costs. That’s why I’ve compiled this list of sewing and fashion design scholarships. Good luck!

Scholarships are super helpful if you can get them. However, college isn’t the best option for everyone. It’s possible to learn fashion design on your own through courses online. They aren’t usually associated with a degree, but online fashion courses can get you started. You could try Jay Calderin’s course, Fashion Design: Start to Finish (affiliate). It might help you decide if you’re truly interested in fashion design as a career.
