My Answer: Yes and No.

I have tried four sewing subscription boxes — IndieStitch, ThreadCrate, Sew What Box, and the Sew Essentials Snob Box. Here’s an overview of each one:

  • IndieStitch: You get a pattern, fabric, and all the notions you need to complete a garment sewing project each month. All the projects are geared towards beginners and the owner makes sure you have access to good instructions and sew alongs.
  • ThreadCrate: This one is very similar to IndieStitch, but unfortunately the company ran into growing pains and had to shut down… I hope they start back up someday!
  • Sew What Box: This little box is made especially for beginners. All of the projects are super easy and they help you learn new skills. I found it a little boring because I already know how to sew.
  • Sew Essentials Snob Box: This is more of a fabric subscription box than anything, Each month you get a mystery cut of fabric. Then, you can show off what you make with it for a chance to win prizes.

What I Don’t Like About Sewing Subscription Boxes

I love a good surprise, but I don’t like opening a box and finding fabric that is not my style. Most sewing subscription boxes operate on a mystery model where you have no idea what you will get until you open your box each month. I like IndieStitch because you get to choose from a few fabric options each month, but there is still a surprise sewing goodie or tool that comes in your box, too.

I also don’t like the subscription boxes that are just mystery fabric. I like to have a project in mind for all the fabric I buy instead of just adding to my seemingly endless stash…

I do find the cost of sewing subscription boxes a little high, but you are paying for the convenience of having everything curated and delivered to your door. If you were buying your own notions online, you’d still have to pay shipping… You’ll have to decide if the cost is worth it to you or not.

Reasons to Buy a Sewing Subscription Box

Sewing subscription boxes make great gifts for people who sew or want to learn. Some people might think that they don’t need a sewing subscription box because they have no problem coming up with sewing projects or choosing the right fabric. However, I think the community element is a BIG Deal. Sewing is often a lonely hobby and it’s nice to be able to chat with people who are working on the same project as you. Plus, you can ask questions if you run into trouble and learn new sewing skills along the way.

A sewing subscription box helps you learn new sewing skills because you get a new project every month. I’ve learned all sorts of new things because of it. Don’t be scared if you’re a beginner; the best way to learn to sew is by trying new projects.

My Favorite Sewing Subscription Box

Out of all the sewing subscription boxes I have tried, IndieStitch is my favorite. The owner does a really good job of choosing patterns that please both beginner and advanced sewists. I’ve been impressed with the quality of the fabric I have received, too. However, the best part is the IndieStitch community. It’s great that you get to work on the same sewing project as other people and can ask questions along the way.
