I decided to buy a cheap sewing machine as a backup while my regular machine was in the shop. I was having some serious sewing withdrawals… lol.

I came across the Brother CS7000X while doing some sewing machine research. It had lots of good reviews on Amazon, and the price was right, so I went ahead and bought it. It is the updated version of the popular, Brother CS6000i model.

Overall, I am happy with the Brother CS7000X. It has more features than I expected for a cheap, basic sewing machine. I really want my fancy sewing machine back, but the Brother CS7000X will get me by. I do think it would be a great sewing machine for a beginner that is learning to sew.

Pros and Cons of the Brother CS7000X

Overall, I am satisfied with the Brother CS7000X. It has all the functions I need to complete my sewing projects. However, I really miss my Bernette b79!

If you are looking for a beginner sewing machine that is easy to use, the Brother CS7000X is a good buy. There are plenty of YouTube videos that can help you learn how to use it. I am also going to use this sewing machine in my FREE Learn to Sew Class if you want to join me.

Pros:

  • Budget-Friendly: I only paid $200 for the Brother CS7000X on Amazon, and it arrived the next day!
  • Lightweight: The Brother CS7000X only weighs 10 pounds, so it will become my travel sewing machine. I really like the built-in handle that is part of the frame and the included hard case.
  • Variety of Stitches: There are more stitches built into this sewing machine than you’ll ever need, and it’s easy to select the one you want because of the diagram on the front of the machine.
  • Drop-In Bobbin: I am so glad that most modern sewing machines do not require you to remove the bobbin case to insert a bobbin — it is much more convenient. The Brother CS7000X is also really easy to thread.
  • Semi-Automatic Needle Threader: The Brother CS7000X is a basic sewing machine, but it does have a little lever you pull down when threading your machine that will pull your thread through the eye of the needle. It is useful!
  • Walking Foot Attachment: This attachment is included in the box, so you don’t have to spend $50+ on a separate one. That was a nice surprise!
  • Adjustable Speed Control: It can sew up to 750 stitches per minute.

Cons:

  • Poor Lighting: There is an LED lightbulb near the needle, but I don’t feel like it gives off enough light. Of course, you could easily solve this problem with one of those sewing machine light strips.
  • No Automatic Thread Cutter: I know I am spoiled with my regular sewing machine (Bernette b79 model), but I really miss having an automatic needle cutter button. On the Brother CS7000X, you have to push the needle up button before cutting your thread. It is a little annoying since I am used to more automation.
  • No Knee Lifter
  • Plastic Pieces: The Brother CS7000X has a metal frame, but most of the molding pieces and attachments are hard plastic. The feet on the extended table attachment seem a little flimsy.

I hope you found this Brother CS7000X review helpful. This is the cheapest sewing machine I would recommend, but if you have a little more money to spend, check out this post: What to Look for in a Sewing Machine.
